Under cover of darkness, the Carmelite monks once again called on the Campbells. This time, however, they were not seeking refuge for themselves but for their priceless archives, which included the personal papers of St John of the Cross. Campbell agreed to take possession of these precious archives and that night a heavy trunk of ancient documents was delivered secretly from the Carmelite library to the hallway of the Campbells’ house.

During the following day republican forces advanced through the city, forcing the defenders to fall back towards the Alcazar. Without the soldiers of the garrison to defend them, the priests, monks and nuns fell prey to the republican militiamen. The 17 monks from the Carmelite monastery were rounded up, herded into the street and shot. In the square outside Toledo’s town hall the Madrid militia lit huge bonfires which were fuelled with crucifixes, vestments, missals and any other religious items discovered in looted churches and houses. From their home, the South African poet and his family watched in horror as they saw the Carmelite library set ablaze.

A continuación ofrece varios ejemplos –y en eso consiste el artículo– de matrimonios polígamos que, según su parecer, demuestran que la idea del matrimonio tradicional ni es tan estable ni ha existido siempre de forma tan lineal como, dice, afirman los partidarios del matrimonio heterosexual. En realidad Chivers solo ha propuesto una especie de juego de palabras más bien inane, y no una idea. Porque su argumento era bien conocido, y si se ha pasado generalmente por alto es sólo porque carece del rigor necesario para que uno se lo tome en serio. Cuando uno menciona el matrimonio tradicional hace referencia a su propia tradición: no a la hindú, ni a la islámica, ni a la de alguna tribu caníbal perdida en las selvas de Papúa. Like other “thought crimes,” homophobia lacks a definition and has no identity in law; you don’t know how to avoid committing this crime, since all lines of inquiry might suddenly turn a corner and land you in the midst of it. The only safe option is to keep your mouth shut, or else to join the crowd and shout “homophobia” in your turn at whichever victim has been currently singled out for persecution. We are already seeing this among the Church of England bishops, many of whom seem more anxious to avoid the charge of homophobia than to speak out on behalf of the biblical idea of marriage. I cannot help thinking that the decision of the Archbishop of Canterbury to step down is not unconnected to the inevitable martyrdom that his office would impose on him, were he to defend the Christian conception of sexual love. On the other hand, archbishops are made for martyrdom and ought not to avoid it.

A propósito de la columna, recuerdo un debate nocturno celebrado en Antena 3 hace unos pocos años en relación con el derecho a la adopción por parte de parejas formadas por personas del mismo sexo. Uno de los invitados, que acudía en representación de los homosexuales –o de los homosexuales que estuvieran de acuerdo con él, conviene decir, aunque puede que la idea de que exista disparidad de opiniones en la comunidad gay le provocara náuseas–, sostenía que el simple planteamiento de la pregunta:

¿proporcionan las parejas gays un ambiente óptimo para la educación de un niño?

es intrínsecamente homófobo. Me divierte ahora pensar cómo es posible responder a una pregunta si, para empezar, ni siquiera se le reconoce la dignidad de merecer una respuesta. Salta a la vista que se trata de una postura envidiablemente anti-intelectual que sólo rinde beneficios y que no exige ningún sacrificio, a menos que la pérdida de la honestidad pueda considerarse un pago digno de atención. La tragedia, por así decir, o la tristeza, si lo preferís, de este asunto, es que el método nitroglicerino de abordar un debate, de detonarlo y hacerlo saltar por los aires reducido a trizas, ha vencido en la arena pública. Se sostiene que asistimos estos días  aun gran debate, pero eso es falso: sencillamente contemplamos el paso firme de la apisonadora.
